When I announced that my family needed to change its diet somewhat… well, to say my children weren’t as excited as me would be an understatement.
More than once they cried: What? Salad again! When are we going to have some real food?
My understanding reply was usually, “This is dinner…eat it or starve.” After all, I had taken it upon myself to get my family in the best possible health — NO MATTER WHAT!
I had decided no more junk food. We were going to sprout alfalfa and have produce delivered by truck once a week. We were going to have meals made up of just fruits and vegetables. We were going to drink juice made from… gulp, barley grass and carrots. My kids were going to be thrilled with the change!
So I sat them down — all seven of them — and gave a brilliant lecture on the importance of good nutrition. I even had charts and graphs. I knew that once they understood, the change wouldn’t be a problem at all. After all, I had intelligent kids. They would understand. Right? Wrong!
C’mon mom… do you really mean no more hot dogs, hamburgers, ice cream, brownies, potato chips and soda pop. You don’t expect me to give up soda pop — DO YOU?
I no longer recommend anyone do what I did. My path to healthy living was paved with good intentions. But my family suffered the potholes that accompanied my attempt to overhaul their eating habits overnight.
You won’t have to endure as much agony. I’ve compiled a few guidelines to make such a transition easier for the caring mother (or father) wanting what’s best for her or his family:
1. Do not say anything to the family about what is to transpire. (The exception here is if the family already has an excellent, above-average level of communication and they would rather have apples instead of Ding-Dongs for dessert!) So like I said, “Don’t say anything.”
2. Without comment — and over a period of months — the meals should gradually become more nutritious.
3. To complement to the regular meat main course, you serve lightly steamed vegetables and a tossed green salad. Less high-fat dairy products, fried foods, pre-prepared foods and canned foods appear on the table.

4. Make a deal with the kids: We eat like I say five days a week… twice weekly, you can pick the menu. Most kids would be agreeable to that. Mine were. Of course, it took me a month to realize the importance of letting them choose occasionally.
(It was during that month that my then 16-year-old son came home one night with two large pepperoni pizzas. He walked in with a smile and a grin-delivered greeting: “Gee mom, you work so hard. I thought I’d take care of dinner tonight!” With his minimum wage salary from sacking groceries, takeout pizza was something he couldn’t afford very often.)
The transition is much smoother when mom AND Dad agree on the diet change. Still the rule is the less fanfare, the better. Slowly introduce more nutritious menus and set a good example of eating and enjoying. Make positive comments about how good the vegetables taste — and how good they are for the body.
If questions are raised as to why the menus are different, be honest and direct: “We’ve been reading (or the doctor told us — or Bob and Mary have been telling us) that junk food makes our bodies sick.”
Follow with statements on how much better you have been feeling since eating “right” and comment on any noticed changes in the children’s health or behavior. For example: “Johnny, you sure have been easier to get out of bed in the mornings since we’ve changed our diet.”
Don’t neglect an opportunity to point out to the children when a slip away from healthful eating produces direct negative physical discomfort. Whether it’s affecting you (”Boy, that ice cream sure gave me a headache!”) or them (”Johnny, see how you are acting since you’ve eaten that piece of cake?”
Keep the “wrong” food out of the house. That way your kids won’t be tempted into eating something they shouldn’t. If you must go to the store to get something, you will often think twice about whether it’s needed — OR NOT.
Children learn by example. A household that manages food properly will help children adopt healthy eating habits.

Mathematics can be one of the most challenging subjects students may take, in middle grades, high school and college. But it can be one of the most fun courses to take as well. As a tutor of basic math, algebra, geometry and trigonometry I have found that some students are very reluctant in enrolling in these classes, science classes too but I will cover that in my next article. We often look at such geniuses as Albert Einstein, John Nash, the movie (A Beautiful Mind) and others and wonder what may be wrong with our abstract thinking process, why can t we understand math and its theories and formulas like others.
I say with confidence don t be afraid of learning math; guess what, math is basically learning the formulas and remembering where and how to apply them. You may think the guy sitting in front of you who gets a good grade on each exam, test or pop quiz every time is brilliant. He may be but most likely he has studied and remembered the formulas and learned how to apply them to the problems given.

My older brother reluctantly assisted me in math and he would always get upset because I could not understand the problems early on in grade school. This seems to help a lot when your peers tutor you and it may be fun. Keep your group around 4 to 5 members and do this early on if problems start to arise, smaller groups seem to get more done.
4. Always, always let your instructor or teacher know you are having problems. This will allow you some leverage that they are aware of any problems you may be having and may devote some additional help or sources of help to assist you.
5. You may want to study each theory or formula with a friend by conversing what you have learned with them. I found this to be very helpful.
6. Write down notes as the problems are being explained. And always try taking courses in sequential order if you can. For example take pre-algebra before algebra and algebra I before algebra II and trigonometry, well you get it.
7. Finally, a very helpful tool is Math.Com on the internet. This is a great website that breaks down problems and provides a better understanding of math.

It is time we learn to enhance and manage effectively our BRAINWARE (a term taken from the management guru, Tom Peters) and forge our path towards knowledge capital rather than physical capital!

On the contrary, perhaps it is the educators who are imparting the thinking skills to the young that deserve our attention. Areeducators here psychologically prepared to be vessels of thinking skills to the future pillars of Singapore? Or, are we still victims of self-induced creative paranoia? We have to break the shackles of creative paranoia first, before we, as educators, are able to impart the thinking skills to the young with fervour and passion.
Another problem of implementing a thinking program in school is the resistance to change of the teachers. Teachers who are used to their traditional methods of teaching may find the learning and use of new teaching strategies a chore for them. A word of advice to heads of schools who are planning to implement this program - NURTURE the change. A program will not be successful unless every member involved is ready for the changes ahead and are willing to undertake their tasks with responsibility and passion. Thus, the success of this program is inevitably dependent on the ability of the head of the school to communicate the vision and to garner support from the staff involved.
In short, a credible thinking programme should not just enhance the brainware but also the HEARTWARE . There is a need to inculcate a creative thinking culture in schools for thinkers (including staffs and students) to challenge them to seek continuous improvements. Slogans such as DARE to CHANGE, DARE to INNOVATE and other inspiring messages must be taught and be ingrained in the hearts and minds of our people. It may remind one of the Cultural Revolution in China with the slogans and the brainwashing. Yes, I have to admit that this is a revolution indeed! A Thinking Revolution that will ensure Singapore s progress and prosperity in these turbulent times as we marched into the next millennium.
To reiterate, unless our hearts are in touch with the vision of Thinking Schools, Learning Nation , the desired outcomes will not materialise. Total commitment to the vision is critical!
There are also other concerns to ponder upon, namely the choice of which thinking models to adopt. There are a few models for teaching thinking that are currently used in some schools. For example, Robert Schawtz s Infusion method of teaching thinking. Other models include Spencer Kagan s Multiple Intelligence and the comprehensive thinking system of the G.O.D is CREATIVE program by Brainwerks Research.
With the various models of teaching thinking available, a principal has the difficult task of selecting an appropriate model to be used in the school. It will be advisable that such imported models of teaching thinking should be adapted and integrated into the local curriculum by the heads and the teachers for better results.
To conclude, this article does not seek to explain fully the workings of nurturing a thinking culture /program in Singapore s education system but to create an awareness of its importance to meet the nation s future challenges. There will be glitches along the path towards the vision but I am sure we, the educators of Singapore, would THINK SMART and INNOVATE to ensure its success. So, should we teach thinking? The question is rhetorical.

Showing off your dog in front of friends and family is something that I personally love to do. Having an obedient, happy slab of lab is like having an obedient happy child. Have you ever been in a supermarket only to come across a screaming baby and a blushing parent? I know I have, and my first reaction is to get as far away from the disturbing scene as possible. I have also been in the undesirable situation of being in public with an unobedient dog and I can say, I feel the pain of the frantic parent!
The term, A happy dog is an obedient dog is one that I really believe holds a lot of merit due to its simplicity. If you have a relatively well behaved dog, that interacts well with the family, it is fair to say that rarely will you or anyone else in that family be angry or even worse abusive towards your pet. On the other hand if your dog is not obedient to a satisfactory level, and does not interact well with the family, one can say that members of that family will have a hard time coping with the pet and this trend can only escalate only leading to the eventual departure of the pet from the family.
When teaching your dog basic obedience, it is wize to make sure that you first have an understanding of the art yourself. Like people, dogs have unique personalities none of which are the same, and it is a good trainer that will take the time to figure out the dog before trying to figure out how to best approach introducing basic obedience. Furthermore, there are many external resources out there for you to take advantage of in order to help you understand the art of training. Books, articles, Obedience Instructors, and the internet, are all viable sources that you should take advantage of when seeking advice, or just experiences from others in your situation.
Below I have listed my top ten components to keep in mind when working with your dog. I did not rank them, as they are all very important to keep in mind as they will only aid you in bonding, understanding, and interacting positively with your four-legged friend:
- Know what your doing V Before comensing any type of training, do your research first! To offen, pet owners try to do all the work their way, get frustrated and take out their frustrations on their pet. Having an understanding of the methodology behind the many types of training, will benefit you to know end.
- Consistancy V Being consistent with your approach is very very important when dealing with your dog in any aspect of life. When working with your dog try to use the same approach each time. Changing training methods mid session for example will only confuse your dog even more than he-she already is. Furthermore, set up training time at least twice a day, and keep to these times. Training time is important, the more sessions you set up the more productivity you can expect in the long run.
- Keep your sessions short V The attention span of a dog is frail at the best of times, thus it is crutial to keep the sessions short. Remember keep the sessions short but do not sacrifice content. Rome was not built in a day.
- Keep training sessions fun V Dogs as do people, like to have fun, and why shouldn t they? Training can be fun for you and your pet! Be lively, treat good behavior, praise your dog to no end, make him feel like he is the best dog in the world, even if he s not!
- Never punish your pet for what they don t know! V To offen, I have seen people talk to their pet with the understanding that their beloved dog is a master of the English language, only to punish them when the desired response is not carried out. This really bothers me because it shows me that that person would rather bully their pet into submitting than taking the time to research, develop and implicate an approach to help the dog learn the desired response to certain words or phrases. (No Hungmay Kowaisa!( Did you understan that? Well you would if you researched the Korean language
- Train to your dog s strength V As stated above every dog has its own unique personality, therefore we must identify characteristics of our pets in order to take advantage of them in our training sessions. If your pet is very lively, take advantage of that! During training sessions, be lively yourself! Match your dogs enthusiasm, when your happy, your pet will be happy and your pet will be very happy come training time.
If your dog has a laid back shy personality, take this into account when training. Still be lively and upbeat as this will spark the interest of your dog, however keep in mind that due to his/her personality, displaying comprehention may take longer due to the shy nature of your dog. It is really important to make a shy laid back dog feel super great during training sessions as this can only improve your chances of continuing successful training.
- Incorperate training into your everyday routine V It can be very beneficial to perform individual obedience exercises through out the day. Simply by performing the sit exercise while you brush him, or having the dog sit while you attach his leash can help to imprint the sitting position. Keep little things like this in mind as they can only aid you and your pet.

After all, in these days of equality, if she is prepared to make a statement then should he not do so as well?
Despite the fact that the wearing of a ring by a woman is a matter of choice, it is in fact almost obligatory due to the fact that it is so common. Many women do not even consider the possibility of not wearing one. Often, however, a man usually considers the wearing of a man wedding ring very carefully.

According to a September 2004 study by the RAND Corporation, “Adolescents who watch large amounts of television containing sexual content are twice as likely to begin engaging in sexual intercourse in the following year as their peers who watch little such TV.” In addition, the National Institutes of Health-funded study found that these children’s sexual behavior was akin to those adolescents who were 9 to 17 months older, but who watched only average amounts of TV with sexual content. “Television habits predicted whether adolescents went to ’second or third base,’ as well as whether they had sex for the first time,” said Rebecca Collins, a RAND psychologist who led the study. “The 12-year-olds who watched a lot of television with sexual content behaved like the 14- or 15-years-olds who watched the least amount of sexual television. The advancement in sexual behavior we saw among kids who watched a lot of sexual television was striking.” This alarming trend occurs within the context of ever-increasingamounts of implicit and over sexual content on television. As reported by the Parents Television Council, “In a sample of programming from the 2001-2002 TV season, sexual content appeared in 64% of all TV programs. Those programs with sexually related material had an average of 4.4 scenes per hour. Talk of sex is more frequent (61%) vs. overt portrayals (32%). One out of every 7 programs includes a portrayal of sexual intercourse.” According to the RAND study, talk of sex had just as much of an effect on adolescent sexual behavior as overt behaviors. Sexual behavior among U.S. teens is on the rise. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 46% of all high school students have had sexual intercourse. The National Institutes of Health has found that, each year, one of every four sexual active teens contracts a sexually transmitted disease. Teen pregnancy in the U.S. is also the highest among industrialized nations. Now, more than ever, parents need to be concerned about what their children are watching on television. The first step parents need to take is to monitor the content of the shows their adolescents watch. According to RAND researcher Collins, “The impact of television viewing is so large that even a moderate shift in the sexual content of adolescent TV watching could have a substantial effect on their sexual behavior.”
Other important steps you can take to curb or mitigate your children’s exposure to sexual content on television include:
Watch TV with your children and discuss your beliefs about sex and about the sexual behaviors portrayed on TV.
Develop TV-watching guidelines for your children and enforce them.

While his health problems were sorted out, finding a new home for him has proved to be something of a problem. Neither friends nor family were in a position to take him in for two reasons - he’s a cat-flu carrier (and my vet was insistent that Ginger should not go to a house that already has a cat) and his age (people are too worried that an ageing cat just means big medical bills down the road). Notices stuck up in supermarkets, libraries and vet clinics didn’t get a single reply. Neither did putting appeals in classified ads papers.

While they couldn’t suggest anyone to place the cat with, they suggested contacting an animal shelter who didn’t euthanise unwanted animals. Unfortunately, when I contacted them, they told me they only now dealt exclusively with dogs (apparently there’d been unholy war between the cats and dogs when they catered for both). They advised me to contact the local Cat Protection Association through their webpage.
While this is a terrific report, I constantly stand aghast if it assists individuals in any way.

Emails to their advertised email address went unanswered and after several aborted phone calls, I got a message saying that they’d moved and had a new phone number. Then, on the weekend prior to what could become a fateful day, I received a call telling me that a home had been found for Ginger. It seems that a grand-niece of Ginger’s original owner has stepped in to take care of him. So, with just one day to spare, Ginger was whisked off to his new home.
It’s a relief knowing that the Sword of Damocles no longer hangs over him and that the thought of having to have him put to sleep is now no longer the cards.
He’ll make a great pet for his new owners as he’s a very affectionate cat. With the exception of being a cat-flu carrier, his health is otherwise good. Given what he went though last year, he deserves to have a few good, happy years ahead of him and now he has.

Your newborn baby is born with a number of reflexes which may only be present for a few days: reflexes like a stepping reflex sometimes referred to as a walking reflex , where your newborn, when held upright with feet resting against a solid surface the natural reflex will be to lift the leg as in a stepping motion.
The clasp reflex is another reflex that your newborn baby will use initially - the baby clings to an object, your finger etc and can hold on quite firmly.
A cuddle reflex your baby will naturally be inclined to cuddle in towards you.
Your newborn and reflexes that will assist him/her with feeding there are two - the rooting reflex and a sucking reflex.
When the nipple presses into the baby s cheek, the baby will automatically turn towards where the pressure is coming from, opening their mouth at the same time, assuming that it is the nipple. If you try to use your hand/fingers to turn your baby s head towards the nipple when feeding your baby s reflex is to turn to where the pressure is coming from, opening the mouth at the same time.

As you hold your baby directly in front of you, try to engage your baby with eye contact, and mimic back to your baby expressions/ facial movements they may be making. E.g. if they are moving their tongue, or screwing up their eyes mimic what they are doing, and add a little extract expression of your own. As you respond to them, and re-enforce their actions, this says to them what I m doing is OK, and they feel pleased with themselves, and they may then try to copy your action. A brand new baby is often too occupied with sleeping to be interested in this, but as they become more wakeful, you will be able to start communicating with your baby this way.
The startle or Moro reflex is another reflex your newborn baby is born with. If the baby gets a fright, or does not feel supported, when you re handling your baby, the baby initially will jerk the arms and legs outwards, throw their head back, and then bring them back over their body. If your baby often exhibits this reflex, just slow down your handling of your baby, and work more at their pace.
The babinski reflex is a reflex that a newborn baby will exhibit when the sole of the foot is firmly stroked the big toe flexes and the other toes fan out.
Newborn babies will blink as a reflex, if something comes too close to their eyes.
So when it comes to your newborn and reflexes just remember that your baby is unique and that your baby will learn at its own pace no matter whether they are a slow learner or fast learner the one thing that will help them reach their potential is to have a dad and mum who love them who value them enough to spend their precious time with them a loving family is worth more than a quick family any day!!!!
